Spring Clean Your Kitchen!

Your kitchen is one of two places — somewhere that you enjoy spending a TON of time, and thus it needs to be clean and inspiring, OR a space that you dread spending time in, or don’t have any time to spend time in, or don’t know what to do in, and thus, needs to be clean AND inspiring!

It’s that time of year, the weather is slowly improving (it is right? It’s taking way too long) and the house needs a good cleaning. Spring cleaning is not just for your closets, or because you have too much stuff; spring cleaning should leave you feeling lighter, and with the things that spark joy (nod to Marie Kondo!)

In order to keep up with your nutrition goals in the kitchen, it’s important to create a clean space where you feel comfortable and enlightened. Maybe that means clearing clutter from the countertop, or placing certain items on the countertop so they’re accessible to you. Maybe it means keeping fresh cut flowers on the centre of the island, or a big bowl of colourful fruit. Whatever it is that helps to create a space that you WANT to spend time in, just do it.

Tonight, I decided to spring clean my pantry cupboards. I married up any open bags or containers and organized my pantry items into jars, just the way I love them.

I keep jars of nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and toppers like shredded coconut, hemp hearts, and chia seeds; they’re on-the-ready, and it’s perfectly organized.

I also keep all of my spices in mason jars so that I can keep enough on hand, purchase the far less expensive bagged spices without storing bags, and because I love my Grandma’s old canning jars — they bring me joy.

I also make a homemade countertop cleaner — and today I’m going to share it with you:

(Note: I use this for quartz countertops, I’m not sure how effective it would be on other surfaces)

Homemade Countertop Cleaner

  • 1/4 cup Witch Hazel (natural astringent with antiviral properties)

  • 2 cups of water

  • 1 tbsp dish soap

  • 10 drops of Purification Essential Oil (perfect clean scent + masks odours + soothes)

*Add all ingredients to an empty spray bottle and shake well. Allow bubbles to settle before using.

*Store in a convenient place in the kitchen and use often.

Oh ya, how’s your wooden cutting board holding up?

Give your wooden board a good scrub with some sea salt and fresh squeezed lemon. Be sure to use a less pourous board for preparing raw meat.

Challenge yourself to spring clean your kitchen this week, make your space more inviting. I promise that you will find yourself wanting to get in there more, and that the task of food and meal prepping won’t feel so daunting once you do.

To Spring!

Ash.
